Product Spotlight: Postcards

I have a bit of an obsession with postcards. I buy them all the time while traveling. We usually get a set to mail out to friends and family and another to keep for ourselves as little mementos.

Postcards are a favorite travel souvenir

because they take up minimal room and are perfect to place all around the house. I even use them as bookmarks. So, when I started thinking about expanding my offerings from art prints and posters, I knew I had to make a postcard collection.

This decision came with a couple of choices, though.

What size did I want to design these at, and what kind of surface did I want to print on? The two main sizes I was deciding between were a Standard 6x4 and a Small A6 size (same as the notecards I offer). I took an assessment of the various postcards I have placed around our home and the sizes I had on hand were about 50/50. Ultimately, though, the extra width of the Standard size felt like it provided so much more room to write, so I decided to go with the Standard 6x4.

Then, it was time to order test prints.

I was torn between a Matte and Glossy finish for the artwork, so I ordered both just to see how my color schemes were represented and assess the quality of each. Once I had them in my hand, it wasn’t even a question. The colors were so much more vibrant with the Glossy. And I love how the linework appears slightly raised from the background of the art, adding this cool layered effect. Also, the Matte postcards were easily scratched up and smudged, so I was concerned that after excessive handling in stores, the Matte surface would no longer look brand new.

Currently, all my postcard designs are created with my Suitcase art as the background.

They all say ‘Greetings from’ and the city or neighborhood has been designed in a style that I felt best reflects the area. These postcards are so much fun to make and I can't wait to design more for other cities!
